Kill Claims

Witold's kill claims and decorations recieved during his flying career

2 kills were with the Polish air force.  Scource: `Lista Bajana' (recognised official Polish claim records) , `Aces High' publication, author Christopher Shores and 'Allied Aces of World War II' publication 1966, author W.N.Hess (see below)

Confirmed claims whilst with the 56th were 4 kills

The claims with the 56th FG were:
1 FW 190 on 22nd May 1944 flying HV-E (P47 `G') (JG11)
1 ME 109 on June 27th 1944 flying HV-M (P47 `D') (JG27)
1 ME 109 on July 5th 1944 flying HV-Z (P47 `D')(JG2, JG5, JG11,JG53, JG54)
1 FW 190 on November 18th 1944 flying HV-Z (P47 `D' `Silver Lady') which was the strafing mission to Hanau with all three squadrons of the 56th taking part. Lanny engaged a total of three FW 190’s that day but only claimed 1 as he was unsure of hits for the kill on the other two. This kill was whilst flying `Silver Lady’ (JG2).

Unclaimed kills:

1 x Messerschmitt ME 109 destroyed on June 27th 1944 flying HV-M (P47 `D)but did not claim the kill. Lanny gave full credit for this kill to his wingman, Patterson, after he had initially fired on the ME 109 on his first pass scoring a few hits but the ME 109 turned away trailing white smoke and was chased and destroyed by Lanny. (JG26).

1 x Heinkel HE 111 destroyed on August 28th 1944 flying HV-G (P47 `D) but did not claim the kill. this was a shared kill and Lanny withdrew his claim even though it was verified by other pilots on their combat reports submitted.

4 x Messeschmitt Me 110 destroyed (GROUND) 5th August 1944 on a Ramrod mission to Bremen / Osnabruck ground strafing an aerodrome (source: Peter Randall).

0.6 Junkers Ju 88 destroyed (GROUND) 16th August 1944 on a Ramrod mission to Hannover (source: Peter Randall).

Lanny did not claim ground kills....

*Note* the numbers in brackets are the Luftwaffe Fighter Groups operating in the area at the time from the Luftwaffe records. It is difficult to find the exact JG's losses for that particular day as the Luftwaffe loss records for most of 1944 are missing.

"Lista Bajana"

Poniższa lista jest oparta na zbiorze dokumentów sporządzonych przez Komisję Historyczną Polskich Sił Powietrznych pt. "Polish Fighter Pilots Achievments during the Second World War" ("Osiągnięcia polskich pilotów myśliwskich w drugiej wojnie światowej"). Dokument ten podpisany został 25 marca 1946 r. przez Oficera Łącznikowego przy HQ Fighter Command, płk. dypl. pil. Jerzego Bajana, stąd potoczna nazwa poniższego spisu - "lista Bajana".

The above picture is from Witold's personal records and shows some of the pilots from the 1938 graduation year from Deblin officer cadet school. These pilots / crew are people that Witold knew or seved with personally.

This shows the `6' kills that Witold had, contrary to the Polish high command records which only ever credited him with 2 ( all is explained in his published memoirs..!)

  The lists

All the lists present the following data:
Name and (when known) first name are presented with arbitrary choice for the spelling (russian, german, arab names...).
RANK of the pilot: see the rank page for the meaning of the abbreviations and the equivalence.
According to the pages, COUNTRY, NATION for the nationality or ethnic origin, AIR_SERVICE for the air arm, are provided.
The number of victories represents usually the total of kills (individual plus shared). The shared kills are indicated when known under the form [indiv+shared]. The official score is indicated when different from the total (American and British scores of ww2 for example).
Authors of the SOURCES column are given; report to the bibliography page to find the books, articles, web pages in alphabetical order. The OTHER_SOURCES column presents the divergent scores with sometimes the author of the source.
The DETAIL column shows occasionally the type of kill, balloons, V-1s, ground kills, unconfirmed kills...
The NOTE column exposes different commentaries and for lack of space, abbreviations are used: report to the abbreviation page for their meaning.
